Welcome to our material details and care section, where we provide essential information on the materials used in our Prairie Dance products and share valuable tips on how to maintain and care for them. We understand the importance of preserving the quality and longevity of your beloved item and we want to help keep your products looking their best!
Materials
Prairie Dance products are made from brushed or patina steel and sealed with polyurethene — our rusted patina is perfect for indoor or outdoor use. If you are fortunate enough to enjoy winter, our signature patina looks stunning against a fresh snow! Our brushed finish wall art products are made for indoor use only. Our signature patina is a simple ecological process that produces unique rusting patterns. Each piece has different characteristics and therefore rusts in it's own unique way. No two pieces will ever be the same.
Dings and Scratches
"Oh dear! We've scratched a piece of our Prairie Dance product! What do we do now?"
No problem. Use a soft cloth to remove any flakes of finish by carefully dusting. Very lightly rub the edges of the scratch with the cloth to soften them. Spray the piece with semi-gloss polyurethane (available at any local hardware store). Let it dry and spray again. Your scratch will be sealed and won't erode any further.
Outdoor Care
Sun will eventually break down the protective polyurethane coating on our products allowing moisture to come in contact with the steel. Most people choose to let nature take its course and let the steel age naturally. For those who don't, keep reading! If you choose to preserve the patina, you may do so by spraying the piece periodically with additional coats of polyurethane. How often the piece needs to be recoated depends on its location. Somewhat sheltered and out of the sun, one coat each year may be enough. In full sun, exposed to the elements, you may want to coat three to four times annually. Spray polyurethane is available at most hardware and home improvement stores. If a product does start to age, don't worry, it will not rust away. Prairie Dance products will be around for a long, long time! PLEASE NOTE: Our brushed finish wall art is not suitable for outdoor use.
